Basic Magic Vanish Methods

0

How can a magician vanish a solid genuine coin in his hand? Among the nineteen classic effects classified in the performing art of Magic, vanish is one of the most magical ones.

The vanish, of course, is simply the reverse of an appearance or production. As with the appearance effect, it may be accomplished with an object, a person or a thing. To the spectator, the performer seems to have caused the subject of the effect to cease to exist. As was emphasized under the reciprocal division, the dematerialization may be gradual or instantaneous. It may take place uncovered and in full view, or within or beneath or behind something, concealed from view.

Of course, it is impossible to really vanish anything. What the magician actually does is to hide the thing out of view. He could do it at the moment of vanish, by the help of speed. Or he could convince the spectators that the object has vanish but in fact hid it later. The object could be hidden right at the location of vanish or transferred some other places.

Practically all of the methods enumerated under the list of principles for accomplishing appearances, reversed, may be employed for the present effect. You may find some of the principles different at sight but in fact with the same essence.

Some of the methods used in the appearance division are more frequently used in their reversed application as disappearances. The Opposite will be discovered in some cases under this division. The natures of some of the principles make them more readily adaptable to one effect than the other. Where one has a choice of the many circumstances in connection with the final trick-conditions, the object used, the character of the final effect desired, and many other factors will influence method that is ultimately selected.

In the process of improving a magic trick, if there is still a choice of method to make, probably that supplying the most simple and direct ultimate result, with the least complication, will be found best. This viewpoint has been valid for years in connection with mechanics. There is no reason why it should not hold true in this connection, in my opinion.

A perfect example of a good vanish effect is the basic coin vanish. The magician holds a coin in his right hand. He puts it into his left hand. He closes his hand and makes a magical gesture, the coin vanishes. The secret is that he did not really put the coin into the left hand. When everybody else believe so and look at it, he disposed the coin undercover of misdirection.

Misdirection is the most powerful principle in magic. A magician once vanished an elephant in a closed room without trap door and surrounded by people. You know how he did it? Misdirection!
